Actual Lives Austin is excited to announce Disability from Real to Reel an unforgettable two-day festival of local and international independent films by and about people with disabilities, scheduled for September 24-25, 2010 at the Dougherty Arts Center in Austin, Texas. The films in this latest venture of Actual Lives Austin, a project of VSA Texas, explore the wide array of disability representation in independent films and offer audiences the opportunity to meet the filmmakers after each film’s Q&A. VSA Texas is providing audio description and captioning for all the screenings.

The festival opens on Friday, September 24, with an Opening Night Reception at 6:30pm at the Dougherty Arts Center, 1110 Barton Springs Road. Showing throughout the two-day festival will be film shorts and main features ranging from the satirical film shorts of Terry Galloway, co-founder of Actual Lives to the inspiring Music by Prudence, Oscar winning Best Short Documentary in 2010, directed by Roger Ross. Included in the lineup are The Eyes of Me, an independent documentary produced by Keith Maitland and Patrick Floyd which aired as part of the PBS Independent Lens in March of 2010, and locally filmed shorts by Actual Lives members Dave Dauber, Gene Rodgers and Tanya Winters.

Disability from Real to Reel will end the two-day event with the screening of the feature NoBody’s Perfect, a film that follows Niko von Glasow as he looks for eleven people who, like him, were born disabled due to effects of Thalidomide, and who are prepared to confront The Stare by posing for a book of nude photos. Winner 2009 Lola (German Film Awards) Best Documentary.

Tickets are $8.00 for each segment, $5 for Senior Citizen, Good Cripple discount. Two- day Pass available for $20 including receptions; $15 for Senior Citizens, Good Cripple Discount. Tickets go on sale September 1, 2010. To purchase tickets contact Lynn Johnson at 512-454-9912 or lynn@vsatx.org.
